SAM ALLARDYCE was this week likened to Prime Minister Gordon Brown by Justice Minister Jack Straw, but Blackburn’s manager is determined to see that as a compliment.

Rovers boss Allardyce is a Labour fan, so he railed at suggestions the main difference was that he was more likely to still be in a job come May. “That’s a bit below the belt,” he guffawed.

But Big Sam was clearly touched by the comparison – “neither of them are pin-ups but people will see real quality” – made in an interview during the Labour Party conference in Brighton.

“Jack, bless him,” said Allardyce. “It was very nice of him. He knows I am a Labour fan, and Jack is a Blackburn supporter.

“I am in a difficult job but I wouldn’t want to be in Gordon’s job. I have met him a couple of times and to be compared to any leader of great stature like he is, is bound to be a compliment.

“I wouldn’t mind a career in politics but I have never pursued it. But I have an opinion. I went to the 10-year celebration at Wembley and enjoyed the evening and had the pleasure of shaking his hand and meeting him as well as Tony Blair.”

The team talk for tomorrow’s game at Arsenal is more likely to be a Churchillian “never surrender” as Blackburn prepare to fight over every square inch of the Emirates.

Across the despatch box will be a leader of a strongly contrasting style in Arsene Wenger, who over the years has made little secret of what he thinks of former Bolton manager Allardyce’s policies.

Arsenal have found the Reebok a harder ground to visit than most and while the best Allardyce has managed from trips to the Gunners is a couple of draws, he is more determined than ever to change that using what he insists are fair means, not foul.

He said: “I would hope we have a mutual respect but I wouldn’t hope for any more than that.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has undergone an operation for a heart problem after suffering chest pains.

The 55-year-old had an angioplasty, in which a coronary artery is widened using a tube called a stent.

Rovers club doctor Phil Batty said: “It has gone well and Sam is expected to be discharged from hospital on Saturday.”

In a statement, Allardyce said: “I would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of goodwill and the entire cardiology team.”

It is not yet known whether the manager will be fit enough to return to his duties ahead of Wednesday’s Carling Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, although it is anticipated that he will be back in time for the Premier League clash with Liverpool at Ewood Park on December 5.

Assistant manager Neil McDonald said: “We wish him well and hopefully Sam will get back as soon as possible.”

  3. Jim Says:

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce has played down speculation linking Morten Gamst Pedersen with Celtic.

Pedersen is reported to be interested in a move to the Scottish giants after falling out of favour at Ewood Park, but Allardyce insists nobody has been in contact with him about any of his players.

“I’ve had no enquiries for my players at this moment,” Allardyce said. “Someone has whispered in my ear about the first bit of speculation, that Morten is going to Celtic. We’re going to get the normal chip paper flying around in the next few weeks.”

Pedersen was an unused substitute in Rovers’ goalless draw at Hull on Saturday and has struggled for form this season.

The Norway midfielder’s current deal with Blackburn runs out at the end of the season, but Allardyce said now was not the time for contract negotiations.

“We’re not in a contract sort of mood at the moment – I’m certainly not,” Allardyce said.

“Talking about contracts and talking about ins and outs at this stage of the season – we’ve got a massive December coming up and a massive January and the distractions that come our way can destroy what you do on the field of play.

“So I want to keep as far away from that as we possibly can and cover it when we are good and ready and consider it to be the right time.”

SAM ALLARDYCE is hoping to get under Arsene Wenger’s skin tomorrow – once again.

The Blackburn boss believes that winding up opposition managers has helped his teams gets results against bosses of the big four in the past.

And if that prolongs the frosty relationship between Allardyce and his Arsenal counterpart, so be it.

Their feud dates back to when Big Sam was in charge of Bolton and regularly used to get the better of the Gunners.

Wenger sparked a war of words by accusing Allardyce’s side of using underhand and physical tactics against his team of football purists.

But Allardyce said: “You play a part as a manager, before, during and after a performance to get a result.

“If that infuriates the opposing manager from time to time then that’s fantastic, isn’t it?

“We don’t play here like we did at Bolton, and we didn’t really play like that at Bolton, only just against them.

“That was the best way to play to beat them. When you find a solution then you put that in place.

“Then you are criticised instead of praised. As an opposing manager, he came out and criticised what we did.

“You just smile and say, ‘I’ve managed to outwit you again and my tactics have been better on the day than yours have’.

“I’ve managed to achieve a result against what has been one of the top sides in the Premier League for a long time.

SAM Allardyce is desperate to sign a striker who can make an ‘immediate impact’ – with negotiations over Aruna Dindane’s potential Rovers move at a ‘delicate stage’.

The Lens striker, currently on loan with Portsmouth, yesterday confirmed he was keen on completing a move to Ewood Park – having already undergone a medical – but the parties involved are understood to still be some way from agreeing any deal.

Allardyce though is also understood to have several other striking targets, including Pole Robert Lewandowski, leaving any eventual deal for Dindane no formality as they carefully consider their next move.

The Rovers boss is adamant he is looking for ‘two new players max’ this summer but insists any signings would have to be capable of ‘hitting the ground running’ – admitting loan signings or lower league gambles would be unlikely.

Allardyce said: “I don’t know if we are a long way apart or what.

“Dindane has had a medical and now we are with the negotiations.

“Whether a deal can be reached is a delicate situation. We will have to see how that develops.

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is on a shortlist of four for the vacant managerial job at West Ham, sources at Sky Sports News claimed today.

The sports channel says it understands that West Ham want permission to interview Allardyce, Avram Grant, Dave Jones and Ian Holloway over the vacancy at Upton Park.

Grant is odds-on 1-6 favourite for the job, while Allardyce was backed in from 33-1 to 12-1 at lunchtime on the back of the Sky story.

Jones and Holloway are due to clash on Saturday as Cardiff face Blackpool in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

  7. Jim Says:

BLACKBURN Rovers chairman John Williams has issued a hands-off warning to West Ham following speculation linking Sam Allardyce to the vacant managerial post at Upton Park.

It was reported by Sky Sports News yesterday that Allardyce was part of a four-man shortlist drawn up by the Hammers hierarchy as they look to replace Gianfranco Zola.

The national sports broadcaster further claimed that West Ham were set to seek permission from Rovers to speak to Allardyce, while it is reported they also want to interview Portsmouth boss Avram Grant, Blackpool’s Ian Holloway and Cardiff manager Dave Jones.

But Williams yesterday confirmed that no approach has been made by the Londoners, and made clear his position that Allardyce is not available.

“There’s been no approach and we wouldn’t welcome any approach,” said the Rovers chairman.

  8. Jim Says:

MIKE Newell says he still regards his time at Blackburn Rovers as the highlight of his playing career, and has backed Sam Allardyce to continue guiding the club in the right direction next season.

Newell was the man who secured Rovers’ promotion to the top flight at Wembley in 1992 when he scored the only goal of the play-off final against Leicester from the penalty spot, and was then part of the squad that won the Premier League title three years later.

The striker spent five happy years at Ewood Park and has been impressed by Rovers’ progress since Allardyce took over 18 months ago.

“Obviously playing for Blackburn was the best time of my career,” said the 45-year-old, who scored 48 goals in five years at Ewood Park.

“Basically for four or five years we were winning every week.

SAM Allardyce wants to quit the Premier League for international management within three years – but is determined to first take Blackburn Rovers beyond people’s expectations.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against AEK Athens in the Sydney Festival of Football, the Rovers boss revealed he does have his sights on testing himself on the world stage by 2013, once his Premier League appetite is fully satisfied.

Allardyce, who was interviewed to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson as England boss, is for the moment fully focused on continuing Rovers’ Premier League rise but admits he does not foresee remaining in the Premier League long term.

The Rovers boss has already hinted an early Premier League exit before in his career, stating during his time at Bolton he was ready to retire at 55, and has now again brought up the possibility of leaving English league football before the age of 60.
