Apple’s co-founder and chief executive, Steve Jobs, made a triumphant return on Wednesday as he unveiled a new range of iPods – including an iPod nano with built-in video camera.
Jobs, who had a liver transplant earlier this year, received a standing ovation as he stepped up to the podium to take the keynote at Apple’s much-anticipated special event in San Francisco.
He thanked the Apple community for its “heartfelt support” as he battled back to health. Still looking gaunt, Jobs said he was a “miracle” and was delighted to be back working at the company every day.
The much-anticipated event was low key by Apple standards, with the biggest product news being a new iPod nano with built-in video camera and speaker.
The new nano also has a microphone, a pedometer, a 2.2 inch display and an FM radio tuner. It comes in a range of colours and costs $149 for an 8GB version or $179 for a 16GB model in the US.
Prices for the iPod touch will be cut, while the iPod classic will be made available with more storage capacity.
At an event for journalists, bloggers and software partners in the city’s convention centre, Jobs also announced updates to Apple’s iTunes and iPhone software.
The new version of iTunes cleans up the design, gives people more control over what content gets synched — or loaded on — to iPods and iPhones and introduces a way to organise applications purchased for the iPhone and iPod touch from the iTunes store.

Apple is to launch a new touchscreen iPod nano which is almost half as small as the current version.
The new device is 42 per cent lighter than the existing Nano and no longer has the familiar touchwheel for moving between tracks.
The new device was part of an overhaul of the entire iPod range unveiled by Apple boss Steve Jobs this evening.
Dressed in his traditional uniform of black top and jeans, Jobs said: ‘We’ve gone wild. It’s the biggest change in the iPod lineup ever.’
Jobs also announced changes to iTunes which included the launch of Ping, a social network for music which lets users share their favourite tracks with friends.
