Blackburn defender Gael Givet has dismissed any suggestion he refused to play in Saturday’s 3-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at Swansea.

The Frenchman, who has not featured for Rovers since his sending-off against Arsenal in February, was not even named on the bench for the game at the Liberty Stadium despite travelling with the squad.

After the match, Blackburn boss Steve Kean revealed he had asked Givet to play, but said the 30-year-old was “not in the right frame of mind” to do so.

Givet has since issued a statement saying: “I wish to make it clear that I have never refused to play for Blackburn Rovers.

“It was just the manager Steve Kean who decided which players would be selected for the match at Swansea.”

Kean – whose side are 19th in the table, three points from safety with four games to play – stopped short on Saturday of saying Givet had refused to play, but said: “It was apparent when I spoke to Gael this morning he wasn’t anywhere near in the right frame of mind to play today, whether starting or on the bench.

“I will speak to him again, and if he is in a better frame of mind then great, but he was nowhere near in the right frame of mind today.

“I can’t get inside somebody’s head, I can only say how much we and his team-mates need him.

“If you look at (Rovers midfielder) David Dunn with his hamstring, he is having injections to play.

“We need guys who want to play even if they are injured or their heads are not quite right, but I would rather keep the conversation between myself and Gael private.

“We need everyone to keep pushing as I believe we need two wins and a draw from our remaining games (to stay up).”

He added: “I said (to Givet) ‘We need you to play today, we need you to start today’ and he was nowhere near in the right frame of mind to do it.”

Givet joined Blackburn in 2009 from Marseille, initially on loan before signing permanently in the summer of that year.

Meanwhile, former Rovers striker Simon Garner has become a non-executive director of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters Investment Trust, a group which is aiming to take over the club from current owners Venky’s.

“I firmly believe the future of the club would be best served if the supporters were in control and guiding it forward,” said Garner, quoted in the Lancashire Telegraph.

“Blackburn Rovers is still very close to my heart. I spent the majority of my football career at Ewood Park and I will always be a Rovers supporter.

“It would be great if other former players also joined up. I know when I was at Blackburn all the players had a special feeling for the club.”

  2. Givet on the way out

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Steve Kean has said Gael Givet “was not in the right frame of mind” to feature in this afternoon’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Swansea.

The Rovers boss admitted he was angry at his side’s display after seeing their hopes of Premier League survival suffer a huge blow.

Givet’s exclusion from the squad, despite being fit, has angered Rovers supporters but Kean insists it was his decision not to play him.

He is adamant there are no financial issues stopping Givet’s involvement but said he was not prepared to talk about why Givet was not ‘in the right frame of mind’.

Kean said: “I spoke with Gael earlier on this morning and after a chat with him it was very apparent that he was nowhere near in the right mindset to be involved. I don’t want to go into the reasons why, we will keep that private.”

Injuries to Grant Hanley (ankle), Yakubu (knee) and Junior Hoilett (hamstring) have deepened Rovers woes as they remain three points adrift of safety with just four games remaining.

Kean said: “We intended to set up like we did against them at Ewood. We did that and before they scored, we did it very well.

“The problem was our passing was a little bit loose, although credit to Swansea they pressured us. That was a factor of the game today.

“I am angry. I think we were very good at 0-0 but we cant be like that. We lost concentration for a few minutes. Not to mention the amount of injuries we picked up.”
