Second-half goals by Junior Hoilett and Yakubu earned Blackburn Rovers a vital win over Sunderland to move Steve Kean’s team six points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Yakubu’s early effort was expertly cleared off the line by Phil Bardsley early on in a tame first half.

But following the interval, Mauro Formica’s shot was saved before Hoilett volleyed in after a long throw.

Ji Dong-won could have equalised but Yakubu’s late header sealed victory.

The result earned Kean back-to-back wins for the first time since taking over in December 2010.

Rovers took full advantage of a 10-day rest since beating Wolves, against a Sunderland team, who played in an FA Cup quarter-final at Everton on Saturday.

The hosts are also now unbeaten in three league games, a feat they have not completed this term. And their form at a crucial stage of the season bodes well for the relegation battle ahead.

They will hope to take that run into Saturday’s fixture against rivals Bolton, who sit five points and one place below them in the table.

But Kean has already spoken of his desire to follow Bolton’s wishes, following the cardiac arrest suffered by midfielder Fabrice Muamba, and it is still unclear whether that game will go ahead.

Both sets of players were wearing T-shirts saying ‘Pray for Muamba’ before the game, with Yakubu revealing a similar shirt when he scored his 15th of the season.

His goals and Hoilett’s link-up play will be key to Rovers maintaining their Premier League status.

Having scored twice at Wolves, there were more signs from Hoilett that the 21-year-old Canadian has profited from moving into a more central position behind his Nigerian team-mate.

Yakubu was fed by Hoilett early on before his chance was acrobatically cleared off the line by Bardsley, Simon Mignolet then stopping Martin Olsson’s effort as the Swede closed down on goal from a narrow angle.

The last time these two teams played in December, O’Neill began his reign with a last-minute victory over Kean’s team, and this was only their fifth defeat in 20 games since.

Four of those losses have come after FA Cup games this season and, having drawn 1-1 at Everton on Saturday, they were again on the back foot after the break.

Formica tested Mignolet from the edge of the box, before Hoilett struck to lift the home supporters.

Morten Gamst Pedersen’s long throw was nodded clear by Sotirios Kyrgiakos, on his Sunderland debut, but Hoilett smashed in on the volley for his sixth of the season.

Sunderland did respond thereafter and Olsson had to be at his most energetic to nip in and clear James McClean’s cross, denying Nicklas Bendtner what would have been a certain goal.

Substitute Ji Dong-won then made a hash of a great chance to equalise when he skied another McClean centre from four yards.

But, just as it looked like the visitors might pinch another later goal as they did last time, Yakubu headed in Bradley Orr’s cross to give them some breathing space at the bottom of the table.

  2. Blackburn Rovers concerned over attendances

Blackburn Rovers’ deputy chief executive Paul Hunt admits the club are “extremely concerned” at the number of fans staying away from Ewood Park this season.

Rovers have seen attendances fall this season as they fight to retain their Premier League status, with Hunt insisting efforts are being made to re-engage the club with the community.

He revealed the club were putting the finishing touches to next campaign’s season ticket prices but accepted work needed to be done to bring supporters back to the football club.

Rovers’ crowd of 20,615 for the 2-1 home defeat to Stoke in January was their lowest for three years and, since then, attendances have been lower again at Ewood Park, including a little more than 18,000 for the visit of Fulham.

Hunt said: “It would be remiss of me to say we are going to increase by 50 per cent. We understand there are going to be issues. We are extremely concerned by the numbers staying away.

“You will get some who can’t go to every game every week but there are more staying away at Blackburn Rovers than last year.

“We desperately want people to come in and enjoy themselves. We are trying to build relationships with the fan base and re-engage.”

Hunt though, who insisted owners Venky’s were at the club for the long haul, said there were positives to take from recent efforts.

“There are plenty of positives to talk about,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire. “The Bolton game we have got an extra allocation, the Wolves game was the perfect execution – it was one of those great afternoons.

“There are so many positives coming out of the football club. The community trust, Blackburn Rovers youth zone. There are tens of hundreds of things we are doing to bring the fan base and community closer to the club.

“Season tickets are the next major fan thing we are doing. I am pretty sure people will not be too disappointed. We want to bring people back to Ewood Park and make sure they have an enjoyable afternoon.”

Meanwhile, when quizzed about Michel Salgado’s situation at Blackburn Rovers Hunt insisted the former Spanish international remained a valued member of the playing staff.

The 36-year-old has not featured since early December for what he claimed were “contractual” reasons.

Hunt said: “He is very much a Blackburn Rovers player. He trains every day and he has been fantastic for the club.

“Unfortunately for Michel Salgado, we have had the rise to prominence of Jason Lowe and brought in Bradley Orr since.

“For me, and it is not my job to pick the team, we get a lot more out of Bradley Orr than we were doing from Michel Salgado earlier in the season.

“He has got a contract and that information is commercially sensitive. I am not prepared to comment on that. He is a very valued member of the playing staff and a decent servant to the club.”
