BLACKBURN Rovers are closing in on strengthening their defensive options, with Tottenham’s versatile Pascal Chimbonda set to complete a move for in the region of £1.5million today.
The French international was undergoing a medical in East Lancashire last night and should put pen to paper on a deal in the next 24 hours – provided there are no late complications as personal terms are discussed.
Chimbonda’s arrival will make him the third right back signed by Rovers this summer, but his ability to play all across the defence would have persuaded Allardyce to take the plunge.
It follows left-back Stephen Warnock’s move from Blackburn to Aston Villa earlier on Thursday.
“We’ve got an experienced player who is desperate to play football again, having missed it at Spurs,” said boss Sam Allardyce.
“The experience of the player, the adaptability of the player in a number of positions and his past record means we will have a good player on our hands and will not miss Warnock too much.
“We all know his favourite position is right-back. We are well covered there, but he can play centre-back and left-back.”
Chimbonda has been signed in time to be eligible for Saturday’s match against West Ham at Ewood Park.

Stephen Warnock is ready to rejoin Blackburn Rovers as part of a swap deal.
Aston Villa left-back Warnock has been dropped by Gerard Houllier and made a scapegoat for recent results – and Rovers boss Steve Kean is interested in taking him AND team-mate James Collins in exchange for the unsettled Chris Samba.
Villa have been trying to sign 6ft 4in Samba but have not matched Blackburn’s valuation.
The clubs were trying to sort out a cash adjustment on top of Welsh international Collins but Warnock’s availability interests Kean.
Rovers’ advantage is that Villa still owe them an instalment on the England international defender.
Samba rocked the Rovers boat when Kean took over after Sam Allardyce was sacked, but insiders reveal he has been angling for a move all season.
Kean is still keen on Blackpool skipper Charlie Adam and is waiting for Manchester City to agree that former Rover Roque Santa Cruz can go on loan. A third ex-Blackburn player, Damien Duff, is unlikely to be sold by Fulham.
Rovers, though, will have to move fast if they want to snap up 16-year-old Crewe teenager Nick Powell, as the England youth striker is also interesting Arsenal.
