I played this for a few days, and was so impressed with the game since I played the trial a few years ago, that I subscribed for a year.

This gave me 10 character slots, and unlocked lots of adventure packs. The game is huge!

Dungeons and Dragons Online is enjoying a second life in terms of player count and buzz, all thanks to a new business strategy: giving the game away.

Turbine is making their MMO as accessible as possible, and that includes making players who don’t pay anything as happy as possible.

Subscriptions are up 40 percent. Ars explores how free can be very profitable.

Dungeons and Dragons Online went live back in 2006, and a number of my friends took part in the beta, enjoying the game immensely.

Then the product went live, and they never played again. The reason was simple: the game was $50, the monthly fee was $15, and for many gamers that’s a hard sell. Then suddenly, a week or so ago, everyone was playing again.

A thread about the game popped up on our forum. Where did this buzz come from? Simple: the game was once again free to play.

You can still buy a subscription, and that comes with a number of benefits, but you can also download the client for free, and play a huge chunk of the game without paying a single cent.

We caught up with Fernando Paiz, the Executive Producer of the game, to explore what might be the next big thing in online gaming: not charging.

“We’re hitting and exceeding our internal targets, so far we’re very happy,” he told Ars when we asked how the game has grown since becoming free. “All aspects of our business are growing. Hundreds of thousands of new players in the world are playing for free, with a very high percentage using the store.”

The internal projections for growth were doubled. Even more surprising, subscriptions have gone up 40 percent since the game has gone free-to-play.

Here’s how it works. Anyone can download the client and create a character and start playing. As you level up, you can buy everything from hair dye to new adventures and dungeons using Turbine points, which can be bought with either real money or earned in the game.

You can still subscribe, which gets you more character slots and a monthly allotment of Turbine points, as well as some other perks.

Existing players get £40 in store.

We knew it was coming at some point. Ever since Dungeons & Dragons Online went free to play in the US last year, its popularity has risen sharply – in May the NPB pegged it as the third largest MMO in the US. So its no surprise that Turbine’s new owners, Warner Bros. Interactive, plan to do the same with the European edition- from next month.

Turbine will be taking over control of the accounts from current hosts Codemasters, and the free version of the game will be up and running from 20th August. From that date, “all European players can visit the official site to download and play the English version of DDO Unlimited with no monthly subscription required. Turbine’s new German and French service will enter beta before the end of the year.”

Turbine are giving existing players a bit of an incentive to switch, too.

“We will be providing free character transfers to the new global service and players will be notified when the character transfer is available. Please note that all accounts will only be accessible through our English service until our new German and French services come online.

“As a thank you to our European players for their patience during this transition and to reward their loyalty, we are offering all current and former DDO Europe subscribers 5000 Turbine Points (nearly a €50/£42 value) when they transfer their characters. These points can be spent in the DDO Store on additional character slots, premium content, and much more.

“We thank Codemasters for the outstanding job they have done publishing and operating DDO in Europe and we look forward to continuing to deliver one of the world’s best online entertainment experiences to the gamers of Europe.”
