Benni McCarthy’s fortuitous free-kick saw Blackburn scrape into the last 16 of the Carling Cup at the expense of an unfortunate Nottingham Forest.
The Rovers striker’s attempted first-half cross floated past everyone and into the far corner to settle the tie.
The hosts had the better of the match and should have levelled after Steven Reid’s handball, but Jason Brown saved from Dexter Blackstock’s spot-kick.
Robert Earnshaw also hit the bar but Forest could not find a breakthrough.
The Championship side certainly deserved something from a match they largely controlled, although Rovers boss Sam Allardyce will undoubtedly point to a “job done” performance from a side that featured 10 changes to the one that lost 3-0 to Everton on Sunday.
And Forest manager Billy Davies will bemoan his front men’s profligacy, with Blackstock, Earnshaw and substitute Dele Adebola all guilty of missed chances – the latter having a last-minute header mistakenly cleared off the Blackburn line by his own player.
Not that Blackburn were without chances of their own and McCarthy should have done better when he headed wide from Steven Reid’s cross early in the second half.
