Hairy Bikers new series

The boys are back with a brand new 4 part series. In ‘Hairy Bikers’ Meals on Wheels’, the Bikers turn their attention to the social issue of the provision of Meals on Wheels to the elderly.

In the wake of the Blitz, war-torn Britain united to deliver hot meals to “the aged and infirm people in the town who were experiencing a difficult time owing to the fact that the able and stronger people who had assisted them were now performing war-time duties.”

Sixty years on and with the number of people aged 60 plus is expected to rise 50% in the next 25 years, the Bikers are determined to encourage members of the community to engage with their local service. Developing recipes to improve the quality of the meals being offered, the Bikers will get to grips with a community who are determined to carry on providing regular, home-delivered hot meals for their elderly population.

When asked why they chose to get involved, Dave said, ‘It is a subject very close to our hearts. We found out that Meals on Wheels were under threat and that we were in danger of losing one of the most important services society can offer’. Si agreed, ‘It’s a personal journey for me really. As my mam got older, the family rallied round to provide the good food that she had loved all her life. When the opportunity came up for us to make the series, Dave and I were very keen.’

The series is a fast-paced look at history, heritage and cooking, using heart-warming recipes, fascinating local characters and a delicious serving of social history. The series starts on BBC 2 on Tuesday September 13th at 9pm.

The Hairy Bikers are David Myers and Simon King, two northern blokes with a passion for cooking and food. The pair began their TV careers working behind the scenes, Si as a first assistant director and locations manager for film and television and Dave as a BBC make-up artist specialising in prosthetics. It was on the set of a TV drama that they first met and became friends.

The cooks first appeared in front of the camera for their pilot Hairy Bikers series, filmed in Portugal. No strangers to travel before they started working together, the lads embraced the opportunity to seek out new dishes from around the globe when their show took off. Since then, they’ve travelled to Namibia, India, Vietnam, Argentina and Mexico as well as sampling the cuisines of places nearer to home, such as Ireland and the Isle of Man.
