Blackburn Rovers boss expects transfer fund kitty

Blackburn boss Steve Kean has said he expects to be given funds in January in a bid to help move the club away from the foot of the Premier League table.

Rovers sit bottom of the table going into a Boxing Day fixture at Liverpool and Kean’s position has been speculated over for much of the season.

But Kean insisted he had held positive talks with owners Venky’s, adding: “We spoke about the transfer window and the need to get defenders in.

“It was a very positive conversation.”

After Blackburn’s 2-1 defeat by Bolton on 20 December, Kean’s position was described as “becoming untenable” by former Rovers player Kevin Gallagher, while many fans have continued to call for the manager to be replaced.

However Kean has suggested that if he can get in defensive reinforcements he can turn the club’s fortunes around.

“I told [the owners] I think we can get these players and let’s push on and get them in the early part of the window so we can have a good amount of bodies and good competition for places once the other lads get out of the treatment room.

“We talk about what I feel is the most important things. The conversations have mostly been about players’ health and players coming in,” said Kean of a squad that has been deprived of defenders Ryan Nelsen, Scott Dann, Martin Olsson and Gael Givet during the season, while goalkeeper Paul Robinson is also a doubt for Boxing Day.

Kean has also been given some support from the man he will pit his wits against at Anfield.

“I don’t think [the abuse Kean gets from fans] is helpful and I think it is sad really that it has come to that, but that is the way it is,” said the Liverpool manager.

“I think it is unfortunate that as a manager you know that results are going to count and if you don’t get them then you are running the risk of getting your P45 (sacked).

“Results aren’t purely down to what the manager does, he needs support from the players, owners and certainly the crowd.”

Givet wants to play

GAEL Givet has begged Steve Kean to give him the green light for tomorrow’s crunch Premier League visit of West Bromwich Albion – despite having a heart scare hanging over him.

Rovers’ no-nonsense frenchman has had tests on his heart over the past two days in a hospital in Manchester, after suffering palpitations last weekend, but that hasn’t stopped him from pleading to be allowed to play his part in Saturday’s relegation scrap.

Kean was this evening waiting for the results before making a final decision on his availability but, with a heart procedure still a possibility, insisted Givet would not feature if there was any risk to his future health.

Givet, 30, was withdrawn in the first half of Sunday’s defeat against Sunderland and was called in for tests this week after a specialist assessed his heart monitor results.

The former Monaco defender is adamant there is no long-lasting problem, having suffered similar problems twice before in his career, and is determined it won’t stop him from helping Rovers climb away from the Premier League drop zone.

An under fire Kean has hailed Givet’s commitment to the cause but admits the defender might have to be protected from himself.

He said: “We are hoping he gets the all clear again in Manchester. If not it is a small procedure to put it right. I don’t know if it as aggressive as surgery, maybe drugs or some type of machine to make it beat at a different pattern.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t come to needing any procedure. I am hoping we get a call saying the last battery of tests were fine and he is available for tomorrow. If not I don’t know how long he would be out because I have never heard of it before.

“It goes beyond an injury though. You have plenty of tendons in your body you only have one heart. If there is anything the medics think that need to be checked then, for his general well being and health and the player moving forward for the rest of his life, you take that very seriously.

“Gael is the life and soul of the way we would like to get about our business. There have been times this season where you would say he should have come off but he just blanks you. He just doesn’t acknowledge the medical team at all and he has carried on with bumps, bruises, strains and tears.

“This was slightly different because when you are at a stage when your heart rate is pumping out if its neck you have to almost protect him from himself. He isn’t worried at all. He is saying ‘do I have to go for these second tests can I not just train and play?’. He says ‘I know what it is I am fine, it is not a problem’.

“We are going the other way and saying ‘lets make sure you are 100 per cent for yourself, for your family and get you back knowing we have done everything to make sure you are fit to compete’.”

Kean, who knows his job is on the line over the next two home games, is expecting to be without Junior Hoilett (hamstring) and Martin Olsson (hamstring) for the Baggies visit.

Steven Nzonzi returns from suspension, while Ruben Rochina and Jason Lowe have been passed fit.
