Former England international Danny Murphy has joined relegated Blackburn Rovers on a two-year contract.

The 35-year-old midfielder left Fulham at the end of last season after five years at Craven Cottage.

He becomes manager Steve Kean’s first signing of the summer as Rovers prepare for their first season in the second tier for 11 years.

“His [Kean's] desire to get me to the club was a huge factor in my decision to join,” Murphy told the club website.

“When meeting Steve Kean, I soon realised the passion, enthusiasm and ambition he has for the club and how much he wants the team to bounce straight back up to the Premier League.

“The owners were also very passionate about their desire to move Blackburn forward as a club and create a squad that is able to achieve promotion.

“I’m excited about my new challenge and can’t wait to get started.

“I have enjoyed a fantastic five years at Fulham and I’d like to thank the club and the fans for all their support. Now, my new challenge is to help Blackburn get promoted and repay the manager’s and the owners’ faith in me.”

Murphy brings a wealth of experience to Ewood Park, having played more than 700 professional matches.

He began his career with Crewe Alexandra before joining Liverpool in 1997. He spent seven years at Anfield and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup in 2001, as well as helping the Reds into the Champions League for the first time.

It was during his time with Liverpool that he earned all nine of his full England caps.

An 18-month spell with Charlton Athletic followed, before he left The Valley to join Tottenham Hotspur in January 2006.

But he made just seven Premier League starts during his time at White Hart Lane and moved across London to Fulham, where he enjoyed much greater success, the highlight being their run to the Europa League final in 2010.

He also scored the winning goal at Portsmouth on the final day of the 2007-08 season, a victory that kept Roy Hodgson’s Fulham in the top flight.

Kean added: “Being able to bring Danny on board is a massive boost for everyone and I couldn’t be more delighted.

“His record is there for all to see. He is a model professional, who has a real hunger to keep on playing football and we are thrilled he has decided to commit his future to us.

“This is a pivotal signing for us.”

Murphy’s arrival at Ewood Park comes as striker Yakubu, Blackburn’s top goalscorer last season, looks set for a move to China.

Blackburn boss hits back at MP Jack Straw

STEVE Kean has labelled Jack Straw’s criticisms of him as “astounding” after insisting it is the support of “experienced managers” that he will listen to.

The Blackburn Rovers boss is facing mounting calls from the local community for his managerial departure but, ahead of Boxing Day’s trip to Liverpool, a defiant Kean was adamant he would not let it affect him.

Blackburn MP Jack Straw called for Venky’s to “ask Steve Kean to leave” on Wednesday, echoing the Lancashire Tele-graph’s call on Monday for the beleagured boss to step down.

Club matriarch Anuradha Desai is still staying loyal to Kean, despite being advised from all quarters his position is untenable, and he will take charge of the team at Anfield on Monday.

A number of Premier League managers have spoken up for Kean in recent days, following Tuesday night’s protests against him, and Kean insists it is their words he will be listening to.

He said: “I have spoken to a lot of managers directly saying ‘you have had a bad time because you have a few injuries but if you had a full squad to select from it would be different’. That is nice to hear.

“I know the local paper or some ex-players have been having a little bit of a pop, or even MPs which is astounding, absolutely astounding.

“When there are managers who have been round the block saying ‘hang in there, you are doing great’, then I will take that all day rather than an ex-players who have never been a manager, rather than an MP.

“I have got a lot of support from some very experienced managers. No disrespect to MPs, local journalists or ex-players, when I get experienced managers telling me I am doing a ‘marvellous job’ I listen to them.”

When quizzed about the financial future of the football club, Kean insisted he was not in the position to answer questions on that subject.

A club spokesperson told us to ‘put these questions to the club and see what answers you get back’. The Lancashire Telegraph hascontinuously attempted to contact the club’s owners on this subject, with no success.

Kean said: “All I can do is talk about games, results, transfer window or substitutions. The finance of the club has got nothing to do with me, you would be better off speaking to Paul Hunt.

“It is up to the directors, they are much more qualified to talk about the overdraft of the club or what has been invested over the last four or five years. I would not know that.

“I am sure that will come. I can only given explanations on the football side of things. I will never duck a conference and say I have sent someone else I will answer the questions.”

Meanwhile Rovers boss Kean is understood to be targeting Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Fulham striker Andy Johnson.
