Yakubu scored on his return from a three-match suspension to help Blackburn secure a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers.

The striker collected a long free-kick and fired in from 18 yards before Steven Nzonzi swept home on 23 minutes.

And Junior Hoilett’s angled shot was deflected in by Nedum Onuoha to complete a fine half for the hosts.

Substitute Jamie Mackie tucked in Taye Taiwo’s cross and found the net late on but QPR had too much to recover.

Onuoha could have made amends for his own goal with a great chance before Mackie’s double, but could not find a way past way Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Despite their late rally, Mark Hughes’s side were made to pay for a poor first-half display, where they looked like a team still getting used to playing with one another.

And the defeat means QPR have won just once in five games since the Welshman took charge on 10 January.

Steve Kean’s team were clinical in comparison with the win allowing them to move level on points with their opponents as they secured their fifth win of the season.

They will also be hugely thankful to have their leading marksman back in the side since his sending off against Fulham last month, and it was a perfect response to their 7-1 mauling by Arsenal last Saturday .

QPR only summoned up two efforts on target before the break via Armand Traore’s shot and Adel Taarabt’s chip.

Other than that, Bobby Zamora’s overhead kick following a corner summed up a miserable half which began with a bang for Nigerian Yakubu.

As has been the case several times this season, it came via route one, with Robinson delivering the ball into the opposition penalty area and, when Nzonzi’s flick landed at Yakubu’s feet, he twisted past Anton Ferdinand before firing past Paddy Kenny for his 14th goal of the season.

Soon after, the hosts doubled their lead when Nzonzi collected the ball in midfield, fed Hoilett and, after receiving his return pass, struck sweetly from just inside the penalty box.

Without the suspended Djibril Cisse, who saw red against Wolves last weekend, Hughes’s team looked disjointed and were slow to support lone striker Zamora.

And their hopes of getting back into the contest before the interval were dealt a serious blow in first-half stoppage time.

Another long free-kick by Morten Gamst Pedersen was headed square by Scott Dann and, when Hoilett picked up the loose ball he somehow managed to squeeze it in from the angle as it clipped Onuoha and went in over Kenny’s head.

The visitors started the second period more brightly, no doubt with a few half-time words ringing in their ears, but Yakubu almost made it 4-0 when he nonchalantly chipped on to the bar from the edge of the area.

That seemed to give Rangers much-needed urgency and Onuoha could have made amends for his earlier own goal but Robinson saved his effort.

Mackie then came on for Akos Buzsaky and gave QPR some reward for their improvement when he tucked in Taiwo’s cross.

By this stage Blackburn were content to sit on their lead, although that gave their opponents more room to operate.

And a remarkable comeback looked possible when Taarabt found Mackie, who found the top corner in stoppage time.

But Rovers hung on and, without the likes of the suspended Gael Givet and the injured Chris Samba, they will be delighted to have their top scorer back in the fold once again.

Everton 1 – Blackburn Rovers 1

Blackburn Rovers picked up a deserved point at Everton to stay out of the Premier League’s bottom three thanks to David Goodwillie’s equaliser.

Tim Cahill gave Everton a controversial lead with Maroune Fellaini’s handball in the build-up missed by the referee.

Rovers hit the post twice in the first half through Scott Dann and David Dunn and were generally the better team.

They levelled after Tim Howard’s fumble saw Cahill crash a goal-line clearance off Goodwillie and into the net.

The result sees Blackburn stay in 17th and manager Steve Kean would have been highly encouraged by what was an excellent performance from his team.

The opening periods of the game were entertaining with both side’s going close. Victor Anichebe made a mess of a volley at one end for Everton and Howard used his feet to save well from Dunn, following David Hoilett’s fine run.

Blackburn looked the most likely to break the deadlock, though, with Dunn in lively form while Dann saw his looping far-post head bounce back off the post.

But it was Everton who took the lead and, having gone close moments earlier through Phillip Neville, who was celebrating his 35th birthday, they went ahead in controversial circumstances.

Cahill scored it, his first goal in 34 games, tapping in from close range. However Fellaini should have been penalised by Mark Halsey in the build up for a handball as he palmed the ball into the Australian’s path.

Blackburn refused to feel sorry for themselves and went in search of an equaliser. Dunn crashed a shot off the post from just inside the box after Goodwillie’s cross was deflected into his path.

Cahill had a late header on the stroke of half time which was saved by Paul Robinson but it was the closest they would go for a while.

Blackburn pressed hard in the second half, starting it brightly but struggled to create a clear cut opportunity – missing suspended striker Yakubu’s power up front. Radosav Petrovic tried his luck from 30 yards with his shot a foot wide of Howard’s post.

Everton introduced Royston Drenthe for Louis Saha while Mauro Formica came on for Dunn as Steve Kean tried another option.

Drenthe’s first real contribution was to fire a fierce ball across the face of the goal but no Everton player could keep up with the speedy Dutchman.

And Blackburn got the equaliser their play deserved in fortuitous circumstances.

Morten Gamst Pedersen’s free kick into the box slipped through the hands of Howard and as Cahill went to clear the ball off the line it crashed against Goodwillie and went into the back of the net.

It meant Blackburn kept their record of scoring in every league game away from home.

Everton went close to retaking the lead late on with Shane Duffy unlucky to see his close-range header come back off the crossbar while at the other end Formica’s chip was just wide for Blackburn

And then in the last minute Everton again came close with a combination of fine keeping and brave defending keeping them at bay. First Fellaini saw his header cleared off the line and then Denis Stracqualursi’s subsequent shot was well kept out by Robinson.
