Titanic violin is genuine

One of the most chilling stories to come out of the sinking of the Titanic was the band who played on on the ship deck even as it went down, determined to enjoy their music one last time, til the bitter end. Led by violinist and 25-year-old bandleader Wallace Hartley, the group scored pathos to the passengers’ doom.

According a wireless radio operator who witnessed it, they played a hymnal called “Autumn.” The story inspired composer Gavin Brays to write “The Sinking of the Titanic” to recall tho whole ordeal.

But the story continues: Seven years ago a violin was discovered that claimed to be the same violin Wallace Hartley played as the ship went down.

The theory goes that after playing it until the very end, he wrapped the violin in a leather case and carried it with him in his life jacket made of cork and linen, and that it would have stayed upright even as he floated out to sea and died, his body recovered from the freezing ocean 10 days later.

The leather case and life jacket supposedly helped protect it against the sea water for 10 days, and the violin was eventually returned to Hartley’s fiance.

After she died in 1939 it made its way into a Salvation Army, where it was purchased by someone shortly thereafter and its history speculated about but never really known for sure.

Seven years ago the auction house Henry Aldridge and Son came into the violin, and they’ve been looking for evidence to verify whether it is actually Hartley’s violin ever since.

Now they’ve done a comprehensive CT scan and examined the inside of the violin using 3D rendering technology to explore its constructions, glue holding it together, and any other telltale markings, and they’ve verified that it is indeed the violin from the Titanic. It even has salt water remnants left in the wood.

“We’ve spent the last seven years gathering evidence and we’re confident that ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ this is Wallace Hartley’s violin,” said a spokesman for Henry Aldridge and Son.

The violin will be auctioned off next year, after touring the U.S. for displays, and will probably made ungodly amounts of cash for Henry Aldridge and Son.
