The Blackburn chairman, John Williams, travelled to the continent yesterday to interview one of the final candidates on the shortlist to replace Mark Hughes, reviving the prospect of Henk ten Cate making a Premier League return at Ewood Park.
Ten Cate agreed a two-year contract with Panathinaikos last week following his recent sacking as Chelsea’s assistant manager. However, the former Ajax coach and assistant to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona delayed signing a deal with the Greek club in the hope of speaking to Williams about the managerial vacancy at Blackburn.
The Dutchman was included in the shortlist drawn up by the Rovers board last week and Williams’ journey has strengthened his claims on the job, although Dick Advocaat, Henning Berg and the former Getafe coach Michael Laudrup have all been linked with Rovers since Hughes joined Manchester City.
One obstacle in the way of Ten Cate becoming Rovers’ manager by the end of this week, the deadline imposed by the Blackburn chairman, is his current pay-off dispute with Chelsea and the west London club’s insistence that he cannot work immediately in England as part of his severance terms.

This just in from a Journo ( Alan Nixon) over at http://www.brfcs.co.uk
Rovers approached MK Dons about Paul Ince earlier today about becoming the new manager . It was an approach subject to approval by the Premier League who have since been contacted.
Ince will be ‘interviewed’ tomorrow for the ‘first time’ but basically the job is his if they can through the coaching badges problem.
The Premier League chairman will be asked to vote – probably in a ring round – but I think they will say yes.
Like I said earlier there had been a call in advance to set up this scenario if they decided to go down the Ince route.
Ince’s guest appearance at a coaching course is his ‘effort to start picking up qualifications.’
It is a bit of a farce, but there we go…
Anyway, I would think Paul Ince will be your new manager.
Do you think any Premier chairman will dare to turn this down…for whatever reason.
It’s a pretty bold appointment. By the way Ray Mathias – his likely number two – is actually a very good man.
