Channel 4 is to begin showing programmes in 3D within weeks.

Viewers will be given special glasses to view content such as a documentary on the Queen’s Coronation, a magic spectacular hosted by Derren Brown and 3D movies.

If the week of prime-time shows in the autumn proves popular, the technology could become a regular feature on Channel 4

The broadcaster’s move illustrates a growing belief in the industry that viewers are ready to embrace 3D TV.

Earlier attempts to introduce it, notably in the 1980s, failed to catch on because of the poor quality of the images.

But experts say that technology available nowadays is so much better that it could become the primary way of watching TV within ten years.

Sky is launching Europe’s first 3D channel next year, which will require a special TV set.

Channel 4 is using different technology.

Some experts even believe 3DTV could become the primary way of watching TV within ten years rather than current conventional methods.
American broadcaster NBC used the same technology for a special episode of series Chuck during this year’s Superbowl, which got increased ratings.

Subscription channel Virgin 1 is using the same technology as C4 to air an episode of U.S. sitcom Chuck next week, and is giving away the glasses with TV & Satellite Week magazine.
